Ray Charles Leonard (born May 17, 1956), better known as Sugar Ray Leonard, is an American former professional boxer. He competed professionally between 1976 and 1997, winning world titles in five weight classes, the lineal championship in three weight classes, and the undisputed welterweight championship. Leonard was part of the 'Four Kings'—a group of boxers who all fought each other throughout the 1980s—and was the only one to defeat the other three. As an amateur, he won a light welterweight gold medal at the 1976 Summer Olympics.

Leonard was born in Wilmington, North Carolina, the fifth of seven children of Cicero and Getha Leonard. He was named after Ray Charles, his mother's favorite singer. The family moved to Washington, D.C., when he was three, and settled in Palmer Park, Maryland when he was ten. He started boxing at the Palmer Park Recreation Center in 1969 after his older brother Roger began boxing. In 1972, he lied about his age to compete in the Eastern Olympic Trials. Sarge Johnson, assistant coach of the US Olympic Boxing Team, said, 'That kid you got is sweet as sugar,' giving Leonard his nickname. He finished his amateur career with a record of 165–5 and 75 KOs. In 1976, Leonard won the Olympic light welterweight gold medal, defeating Andrés Aldama by unanimous decision. After the Olympics, a paternity suit was filed against him by his high school girlfriend Juanita Wilkinson, who had given birth to their son Ray Charles Leonard Jr. The negative publicity from the suit, combined with his father's hospitalization for meningitis and his mother's heart attack, led Leonard to turn professional rather than attend college. He went on to defeat future Hall of Fame inductees Thomas Hearns, Roberto Durán, Marvin Hagler, and Wilfred Benítez. Outside boxing, he has worked as a boxing analyst and actor, appearing in television shows and films including Half & Half, L.A. Heat, Married... with Children, Renegade, Tales from the Crypt, I Spy (2002), and The Fighter (2010).
